Bullet Bill and Spiny (Blue) Shell are the best items in a Race, and Mega Mushroom, Starman and Red Shell are the best in a Battle.

I like the star, the triple mushrooms, and also triple bananas. I drop bananas in narrow spots. And, I hang on to one of them in case of red shells.
