Video games regularly receive negative publicity concerning game violence and its impact on the youth, but a hospital in Edmonton is giving video games some positive publicity for once.
Nearly five months ago, boxer Albert Liaw suffered brain damage during one of his matches. Now, as part of his rehabilitation, Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital is using boxing in the popular Wii Sports game to supplement his regular therapy.
Don Simoneau, Liaw's occupational therapist believes that the game's entertainment value added to its success. "It was very motivating. We could have him do therapy for an hour and he wouldn’t mind one bit. Now when I see him playing today it’s incredible to think back to where he was," he stated. "We try to use activity but there is only so many times you can bat a balloon around back and forth. And only so many times you can reach for a bean bag,"
